Family businesses are the basis for the economies of many countries in the world. Despite the increasing awareness of this fact, it is very difficult to determine their precise importance in economies. The reason is the lack of generally accepted definition and no consideration of them in the statistics as a separate category of entities. An example of a country in which family businesses play a key role in the economy is Spain, which has one of the highest percentage of family businesses in the overall structure of enterprises among European Union countries. It is also one of the few countries where family entrepreneurship is strongly supported by special state institutions and academic researchers, conducting a number of studies related to these entities. The aim of the article is to assess the functioning of the family business in Spain - the role they play in the economy of this country, they general characteristics and perspectives of further activities.
