The development of a theory of network of collaborating companies is a response for changes in the business environment. The approach to the networks of collaborating companies proposed in the article shows the network as a base of resources allocated to various alternative tasks. Such a dynamic allocation of resources of collaborating companies can be considered because of the maximisation of the number of orders carried out in a complete and timely manner, the maximisation of costs of implemented tasks, the maximisation of personal abilities use etc. The article describes business networks and clusters, indicating their common features and differences, referring to selected cluster initiatives in the Silesian Voivodeship and certain supply and distribution networks. The adaptation of network coordinators' business models to the types of networks is highlighted. Simultaneously, it is assumed that the network coordinator's business model type significantly affects the choice of the resource allocation model. Showing the significance of systems supporting coordinators in making decisions on the resource allocation, key resource allocation models discussed recently in the operational management-related literature were specified.(original abstract)
