The present paper focuses on the identification and analysis of the limitations of data gathering on migrants and migration flows, particularly in the context of the so-called "migration crisis" which stands as one of the main security and social challenges that the European Union must face nowadays. Furthermore, the analysis of the sources of data and information as regards this type of migration was pursued. Complementing, certain approaches, methods and techniques applied in the migration research were described. In addition, the study briefly discusses the evolution and dynamics of migration flows from Africa to the European Union in the recent years. The author concludes that, the precise data concerning the migrations between Africa and Europe is still hardly available, especially if one takes into account a number of limitations in data gathering. Nevertheless, because the situation regarding the migration flows and new policies that deal with the issue is particularly dynamic, a proper, up-to-date research must be continuously carried on. Jej dopełnienie stanowi opis wybranych podejść, metod i technik stosowanych w badaniach nad migracjami.
