Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is the basis for the European Union's policy for creating efficient freight and passenger transport links (including roads, railways, airports and the inland and sea waterways) between particular Member States. The basic ideas standing behind TEN-T policy have been to support economic growth, increase the competitiveness of regions and increase employment levels. However, as in the recent decades new and serious challenges have increased in importance (climate change, biodiversity loss, natural resources depletion, etc.), the concept of sustainable development has been evolved as an answer to these challenges while its implementation has been usually declared in various European policies. In this context, this paper provides an introduction to the TEN-T policy and scrutinizes one of the TEN-T's priority projects: the inland waterway along the Danube River. An important problem highlighted in the paper concerns a contradiction between EU sustainable development objectives and the implementation of chosen TEN-T project, which is expected to cause vast negative environmental consequences. Transeuropejska sieć trasportowa (ang. Transeuropean Trasport Network, w skrócie TEN-T) stanowi podstawę unijnej strategii tworzenia efektywnych połączeń transportowych dla przewozu towarów i osób w krajach Unii Europejskiej. TEN-T uwzględnia projekty drogowe, kolejowe, lotniska oraz szlaki żeglugi śródlądowej i morskiej. Podstawowymi założeniami TEN-T jest stymulacja wzrostu ekonomicznego, zwiększenie konkurencyjności regionów oraz podwyższenie poziomu zatrudnienia. Jednocześnie globalne problemy, takie jak zmiany klimatu, zubożenie zasobów naturalnych, wymieranie gatunków i utrata bioróżnorodności, są coraz istotniejsze i wymagają kompleksowych strategii i uwzględnienia na różnych szczeblach polityki, również unijnej. Koncepcja zrównoważonego rozwoju powstała jako odpowiedź na te wyzwania i rzeczywiście Unia Europejska często deklaruje zgodność swojej polityki z wdrażaniem koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju. W tym kontekście, artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do polityki TEN-T oraz studium przypadku, jakim jest jeden z projektów priorytetowych- szlak żeglugi śródlądowej na rzece Dunaj. Istotnym problemem, który został poruszony w artykule, jest kolizja pomiędzy unijnymi celami zrównoważonego rozwoju, a przykładowym projektem priorytetowym, którego wdrożenie będzie miało wiele negatywnych i nieodwracalnych konsekwencji dla środowiska.
