Potencjał miast możliwy do wykorzystania w przestrzennym procesie metropolizacji wynika z ich określonych właściwości lokalizacji, walorów przyrodniczych i kulturowych, tradycji miejsca oraz wielu uwarunkowań, które uzyskują miano istotnych wartości stymulujących ich rozwój. Jednym z czynników wartych uwzględniania jest zabytkowy charakter fragmentów miast wraz z ich historycznymi nawarstwieniami, które niejednokrotnie stawały się katalizatorem współczesnych inwestycji i inspiracją dla projektantów. Proces ten można przeanalizować na podstawie dwóch przykładów konkursów architektonicznych dotyczących zagospodarowania miejsc w obrębie zabytkowego centrum w sąsiadujących ze sobą miastach okręgu metropolitalnego - Bydgoszczy i Toruniu.(fragment tekstu)

Contemporary Investments with Relation to Historic Spatial Arrangements on the Example of Bydgoszcz Town Square and Jordanki in Toruń. In February 2009 an international competition for the architectural-urban concept of the Western Frontage construction of Bydgoszcz Old Market square was held. There were fifty-two studios that took part in the competition; apart from the first prize (GM Architekci Sp. z o.o. from Bydgoszcz), the second prize and the third prize as well as three commendations were awarded to the contestants. The form of the edifice proposed by GM Architekci was subtly divided so that it resembled the arrangement of no longer existing historic tenements and the church situated in the middle. The eastern section was dominated by The Town Square of Four Seasons, a square space designed for varied purposes (water pond; ice rink; exhibition or concert area). The design of the urban arrangement of the town square presents a trend that has become characteristic to the city, namely resigning from the original historic edifices for modern architecture that become the expression of the development of the city and following the changes of the contemporary architectural design concepts. The endeavors to the create a design for Jordanki, a district of Toruń, started as early as 2006 when a closed architectural design competition was organized; four studios entered the contest. Due to major rescaling of the proposed edifices as well as the lack of respect for historic buildings the designs were not brought to fruition. In April 2008 another competition for a multi-purpose hall in Jordanki was announced. The winner was a Spanish architect Fernando Menis, who defeated Marek Budzyński and JSK Archtekci team. Menis' edifice is convincing due to the properly chosen scale and the adopting of the surrounding buildings. The colors of the elevation referring to the greyness of the plaster, beneath which the red-brick construction is visible creates architectural dialogue with medieval architecture. The edifice fulfills exactly the requirements of the contest regarding the universality in the mode of usage (symphonic concerts, theatre performances, scientific conferences). The struggle of the authorities in Bydgoszcz and in Toruń as far as new investments in the very historic centers of the cities are concerned illustrate multidimensional character of the issues involved resulting from the financial and economical problems as well as those connected with the protection of cultural values of historic spatial arrangements.(original abstract)
