Abstrakty

Effects of demographic changes undergoing in the contemporary societies are predominantly discussed in macro level terms. It is mainly a result of an availability of relevant data. However, morę nad morę studies offer also insights in the micro level consequences, i.e. conseąuences at the family Ievel. Simultaneously, difficulties experienced by many institutions of welfare state, resulted mainly from their financial burden, shift a research interest towards incentives and counterfactors for family caregiving, i.e. for traditionally prescribed care responsibilities for the children, the elderly, and disabled and sick family members. The article attempts to join both approaches to present effects of demographic changes for intergenerational transfers. Firstly, changes in kinship networks are discussed with a focus on mortality effects. Next, kinship net- works are considered as a social institution, which undergoes an evolution, resulted also from changes in family formation and dissolution patterns. The presented famę for discussion is based on the overview of relevant demographic, sociological and geronthological publications.(original abstract)
