In this paper quantitative methods were used to establish whether petrol prices really respond faster to crude oil price increases than to decreases, as it is sometimes stated by drivers in the UK. The model created in this paper is designed to look for asymmetric patterns in the process of reverting to the long run equilibrium after shocks to the upstream variables. It can be used to assess asymmetries in interest rates and prices and to detect the impact of the transaction costs (consistent versions of TAR and M-TAR models) in many markets. Last but not least, it may be able to detect the impact of foreign exchange rate bonds. The composition is as follows. The first part presents up-to-date developments in the theory behind modelling asymmetric price transmission. It also reports results of previous studies. This review is aimed only at familiarizing the reader with the state-of-the art not at providing the comprehensive study of the modelling techniques. This is the task of the second part in which, the empirical methods developed for assessing asymmetry in price transmissions are described. Next part describes the results of the application of time series techniques aimed at characterising the nature of the long-run relationship between crude oil prices and retail prices of 4 Star petrol. The last sections deal directly with the issue of asymmetry. (fragment of text)
Państwa te dążą do utrzymania obecnego udziału w rynku i wyeliminowania konkurentów o wysokich kosztach produkcji. Ich politykę należy tłumaczyć obawą o utratę rynku w długim okresie. Oznacza to zmianę polityki OPEC, który tradycyjnie podejmował działania mające na celu utrzymanie określonego poziomu cen. W Arabii Saudyjskiej widziano producenta dostosowującego podaż do popytu i w ten sposób stabilizującego ceny (swing producer).
Jednocześnie należy w przyszłości oczekiwać spadku oddziaływania zmian światowych cen ropy naftowej na dynamikę cen konsumpcyjnych w Polsce w miarę upływu czasu i dalszego rozwoju gospodarczego kraju. This study focuses on the effects of oil price changes on food prices in oil-exporting developing countries between 2001 and 2014. These effects in net food-importing and oil-exporting, developing countries have not received adequate attention in literature. The methodology included the application of a non-linear panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. The bound testing cointegration analysis of the non-linear panel ARDL specification suggests the presence of co-integration among the variables: food prices, oil price, inflation, and trade openness. The estimated non-linear panel ARDL model indicated the presence of asymmetry in the behavior of food prices solely in the long run. More specifically, in the long run, there is a significant and positive relationship between oil price increases and food prices. Meanwhile, no long-run relation is found between oil price reduction and food prices. Furthermore, the model suggests the absence of asymmetry in the behavior of food prices in the short run, as the relations between both increase and reduction in oil price and food prices are found to be insignificant. The study, therefore, recommends that oil-exporting developing countries should adjust their public policy schemes in such a way as to enable reductions in the oil price to trickle down to food prices. In addition, these countries should ensure the implementation of long-term agricultural policies aimed at insulating their economies from global food crises that may arise due to oil price increases. This paper examines the optimal hedging ratio (OHR) for the Brent Crude Oil Futures using daily data over the period 1990/17/8-2014/11/3. To gain OHR, it is employed a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) and Vector Error Correction (VEC) and Baysian Vector Autoregressive (BVAR) models. At last, the efficiency of these calculated OHR are compared through Edrington's index. (original abstract)
W uwagach końcowych zostały przedstawione pewne rozwiązania, reorientacja istniejącego modelu konsumpcji i zmiany przeregulowanego rynku żywności. (abstrakt oryginalny)
In this study, Japan's LNG import contracts are discussed. Given the importance that these contracts are oil-indexation, the impact of crude oil price volatility (emphasizing OPEC oil basket) on LNG prices was studied using a structural VAR model from January 1997 to October 2017. Also, the HodrickPrescott filter was used to separate positive and negative shocks to investigate the effect of oil price shocks on LNG prices. The results showed that the relationship between LNG and crude oil prices has increased over time and that the effect of price shocks was asymmetric so that the impact of positive shocks was more lasting and more significant than negative shocks. This imbalance indicates that the basic oil contracting mechanism generally works to secure sellers' rights. So Japan needs to reform its contracts. Looking at gas sales contracts elsewhere in the world, it seems that the best alternative to current contracts would be the formation of an LNG hub in the North and East Asian region with the focus on Japan or Singapore.
Objective: The objective of this article is to investigate the connection between unrefined oil price and stock prices in Sub-Saharan Africa with particular accentuation on the Nigerian economy. Research Design & Methods: Based on the time series data used, we applied co-integration test and a restricted Vector Autoregressive Approach to verify the existence of each short and long-term relationship among the variables of interest. Findings: The results revealed that there is very little correlation between crude oil price and stock indices, thereby implying that such an impact cannot be completely expected in the short run. Moreover, the study showed causality relation running from crude oil price and real rate of exchange to stock indices. Implications & Recommendations: Since the study disclosed that petroleum price and rate of exchange values have far more impact on stock market indices in the long run than in the short run in Nigeria with rate of exchange contributing more to the general changes in available market indices throughout the study period, thereby suggesting that stock exchange indices are insensitive to crude oil price variations in the short run and thus resulting in loss of confidence by the investors. Consequently, the study recommends that the sitting government ought to utilise the revenue generated on the sales of petroleum to diversify the economy. Contribution & Value Added: In this study, we tried to point out the responses of crude price shocks to stock prices, particularly throughout the previous and current administration in Nigeria. The study was able to discover that changes in unrefined oil do not impact the stock indices. (original abstract)
The contemporary refining sector has to contend with many types of risks, among which price risk is considered to be the foremost. Moreover, refineries define it as a commodity risk and identify it with both opportunities and threats carried by changes in prices of crude oil and products of refining. In this paper, we present selected methods that may protect enterprises in the refinery sector from the consequences of rapid fluctuations in oil prices. The focus is mostly on the opportunities offered by commodity options. Skillful combination of the above-mentioned derivatives in optional strategies enables hedging of the purchase prices of raw materials within fixed price ranges. In order to examine the effectiveness of using these strategies, the parameters of the commodity options from the New York Mercantile Exchange are utilized. The analysis of the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices covers the period from June 2014 to March 2018. Three different strategies from the vertical spread group have been taken into consideration, namely, short butterfly spread, long strip, and long strap. European call and put options with different strike prices have been used in the construction of these strategies. The comparison of the results achieved in the research indicates that there is an answer to the question of strategies that ought to be used at various levels of oil price changes. Moreover, the empirical results reveal that during rapid fluctuations in crude oil price (>10% month on month [MOM]), the median of most variants (80%) for the three considered strategies was positive. Furthermore, 70% of variants gave positive results, with price changes between 5% and 10%, whereas for price fluctuations of <5%, the strategies turned out to be an ineffective protection. The best results with rapid fluctuations in oil prices were obtained in the long strip strategy. Additionally, increasing the exercise price of options used in this strategy improved the mean for the final results. The higher exercise prices of the options also resulted in greater sensitivity of the effectiveness of the long strip strategy on the level of changes in oil prices. For the strategy variant with the At The Money (ATM)+10% options, the Pearson's correlation coefficient between the final result and the WTI oil prices in the analyzed period amounted to -0.91. For variants with the ATM+5% and ATM options, the value of this coefficient was -0.85 and -0.71, respectively. It is also worth noting that the consequence of increasing strike price in the long strip strategy was higher standard deviations for the final results. The empirical results might be useful information for oil refineries. It can help refineries to create a more successful price risk management policy, which may thus protect the companies from the negative consequences of unfavorable crude oil price movements.(original abstract)
Research background: The need for diversification of the Nigerian economy has been emphasized and the manufacturing sector has a major role in this. Being an oil producing country, monetary policy is an important macroeconomic policy that has always been used to manage the influence of oil price shock on the manufacturing sector. Purpose: The study examines the relationship between oil price shock, the monetary transmission mechanism and manufacturing output growth in Nigeria. Research methodology: The study applied the structural vector auto regression (SVAR) modelling technique and a descriptive analysis. Results: The results of the study show that the exchange rate is mostly affected by the oil price shock, while the monetary policy instruments and inflation rate are also very responsive to the exchange rate shock. The manufacturing sector output growth has also been shown to be strongly affected by the inflation rate and monetary policy shocks. Novelty: The study has revealed the most effective channel via which oil price shocks affect manufacturing output. The exchange rate channel of the monetary policy transmission mechanism is the most significant channel through which oil price shock affects manufacturing output growth in Nigeria. This shows that effective management of the exchange rate policy via the appropriate monetary policy approach can be used to minimize the adverse effect of oil price shocks on Nigerian manufacturing output. This study aims to investigate the effects of crude oil price (COP) and base rate (BR) on the strength of the Ringgit (RM) against the US Dollar (USD). Within the framework of the international Fisher effect theory, the study employs yearly data from the Bloomberg Database over an observed period from 1984 through 2017. Using bivariate Engle-Granger cointegration test as an estimation tool, the study reveals the presence of a long-term relationship between the RM and COP. However, the results of the Granger Causality test show an absence of a dynamic relationship between them. From the second analysis between the RM and BR, the study finds the presence of both long-term and short-term relationships between them. Interestingly, the relationship is somewhat bidirectional. Overall, the study has suggested the relevance of the international Fisher effect in explaining how variations in the RM exchange rate are elucidated by the bank lending market. In addition, it is worth noting that both BR and COP exert a significant influence on the strength of the RM against USD over time. (original abstract)
