Content available remote The Economics of Nonprofits
100%
W artykule rozważaniom poddano nastawienie ludzi religijnych do działalności organizacji niekomercyjnych.

Jana Grandego w Krakowie przedstawiono trudności i wyzwania, przed którymi stoją prywatne organizacje non-profit, funkcjonujące na rynku usług zdrowotnych w Polsce.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to identify the differences in methods of donations - both in cash and in-kind - among the largest American and Polish nonprofit organisations in the online environment. Design/methodology/approach: The study focused on examining a selection of the one hundred largest nonprofit organisations from both the United States and Poland. These organisations were selected using comprehensive databases and accessible financial, as well as activity reports. Employing a quantitative approach, the research analysed the websites of these organisations to identify diverse strategies employed for soliciting cash and in-kind donations using the content analysis method. Essential statistics related to the variables being studied were computed, and non-parametric tests were employed to validate hypotheses. Findings: This paper focused on determining the relationship between the number of cash and kind donation methods offered by nonprofit organisations and the total revenue earned by the organisations and revenue from private donations. The paper demonstrated that the American organisations with the highest revenue are more professional with respect to possibilities for online donations and, at the same time, more homogeneous (i.e. there are no fundamental differences between larger and smaller organisations in this regard). Moreover, compared with Polish organisations, they adjust better to the environmental requirements by introducing various donation methods (e.g. shares, mutual funds, cryptocurrencies, etc.). Research limitations/implications: Only one hundred of the largest American and Polish organisations were examined. Most of them are defined by one parameter only - the revenue amount. The study analysed only the nonprofit organisations' websites, without taking into consideration other online environment components, e.g. social media. Practical implications: Nonprofit organisations can consider - on a benchmark basis - introducing specific solutions regarding the obtaining of cash and kind donations. This can raise the donation amounts and, in consequence, improve the effectiveness of accomplishing the organisation's mission. Social implications: Nonprofit managers can obtain knowledge of other methods of acquiring donations by the use of the Internet. This will make their organisations' activities more professional, thereby reinforcing the development of civil society in Poland. Originality/value: Comparisons of American and Polish nonprofit organisations with respect to proposed methods of online cash and kind donations have not been diagnosed. Therefore, considerable differences were identified whose reasons should be the object of further in-depth scientific exploration. (original abstract)

Content available remote Znaczenie sektora non profit
80%
XX w. umiejscowionego pomiędzy państwem a rynkiem. Socio-economic and political changes after November 1989 have strongly influenced Slovak society, with impacts being observed on almost all areas of economic, political, social and public life. Highly intensive development of the so-called "third sector" has been among these factors. A new legislation framework has been created. Non-profit organizations have become the state's partners in the area of providing social services not secured by the state, and these organizations have strong economic and social power, influencing the development of the whole society. Today, financial sustainability is one of the fundamental problems in the non-profit sector. This problem has become more important due to foreign capital withdrawal by donors to non-profit organizations, primarily during the 1990s. National support from public sources is limited and is not sufficient for the functioning of non-profit organizations. In non-profit organizations, we emphasize the necessity of the diversity of financial resource structures, ensuring their independence, financial stability and sustainability from both short-term and long-term perspectives. The aim of this article is to establish key criteria for non-profit organizations' financial sustainability, subsequently investigating these criteria's dependence and the level of financial source acquisition in a selected sample of Slovak non-profit organizations. We assume that owing to these criteria, non-profit organisations (NPOs) could better formulate their financial strategies, diversify and stabilize their financial sources and transform this strategy into a long-term strategic plan to maintain and develop their entrepreneurial missions. Engagement and volunteerism are important issues in the area of Human Resource Management. Organized in Krakow in 2016, World Youth Days (WYD) exposed many phenomena related to these areas, creating an interesting research field. This paper identifies and explains the terminology and concepts existing in the literature that concern engagement and characterizes the volunteering issue in the context of Polish social reality. The article also contains selected findings of a survey conducted among World Youth Days volunteers. Based on it, this paper shows the characteristics of selected relationships and the social and demographic conditions of volunteerism in that specific research perspective. Research has shown that, within the volunteers' groups, it is possible to use professional and modern management methods. Our findings lead to a set of suggestions for team leaders that have the potential of creating a higher level of engagement among participants and may enable better organizational management.(original abstract)
Purpose: The aim of the research undertaken in the article is to try to find an answer to the question whether, despite the fact that non-profit organizations are not intended to be commercially profitable, it is possible to assess the effectiveness of their activities. Design/methodology/approach: The article consists of a literature study that reviews publications on methods for measuring the effectiveness of non-profit organizations. For the literature analysis, publications relating directly or indirectly to the topic of operation of non-profit organizations and measuring their effectiveness were used. The literature on this topic is not extensive, compared to publications dealing with the issue of measuring efficiency in commercial enterprises. In addition to the analysis of individual methods of measuring the effectiveness of non-profit organizations indicated in the literature, a comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the proposed solutions was made. Findings: During the research, it was found that there are methods of measuring effectiveness, which differ significantly from traditional methods used to evaluate business activities, and can be used in the evaluation of non-profit organizations. Research limitations/implications: Based on the research conducted, implications for the future can be identified. They may concern the use of selected methods to assess the effectiveness of selected non-profit organizations. Practical implications: Practical implications of the obtained results may concern the use of the presented methods of assessing effectiveness by managers and supervisors of non-profit organizations. Social implications: The use of the methods presented in the article for assessing the economic efficiency of non-profit organizations will allow potential donors to direct support to organizations that use the accumulated capital most effectively. However, it does not have to be efficiency measured in financial terms. Originality/value: The article indicates what methods of assessing effectiveness can be used in the case of non-profit organizations. The value of such research is the ability to evaluate the activities of non-profit organizations without having to take into account financial aspects. (original abstract)

Content available remote Between Fun and Obligation : the Motivations of Volunteers in Poland
80%
The aim of this paper is to facilitate understanding of the motivations of volunteers working in Poland. In the theoretical framework of the analysis we have applied the so-called functional approach, which recognizes six types of volunteer motivations: social, protective, enhancement, career, understanding and value-expressive. The thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with 26 volunteers addressed three objectives. First, we investigated how motivations of volunteers in Poland corresponded to the functional typology, then sought to identify distinct aspects of particular functions, and finally, tried to find new types of volunteer motivations. In the analysed interviews we found references to all six types of volunteering motives. We also identified new types of motivation (social integration and utilitarian) as well as aspects of the existing functions, which had not been recognized in the original theoretical framework.
Each entity paying taxes would like to have real influence on the way of their allocation. Since 2004 in Poland payers of personal income tax were able to decide about donating 1 percent of personal income tax to a chosen public benefit organization for the first time. Since the introduction of the possibility of donating non-profit organization (NPO) tax regulations were repeatedly modified. Did tax-payers willingly use the ability to decide who they should donate their 1 percent of personal income tax to? In what way did changes of tax regulations influence taxpayers' decision? In order to answer those questions soft modelling was used, which allowed to examine the influence of changes in regulations relating to 1 percent of personal income tax on taxpayers' decision.
