This study investigates the relationships between remittances, financial development, and economic growth in Western Balkan countries during 2002-2022. Employing a dynamic panel data approach, the research encompasses a multi-faceted regression strategy, including Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Fixed Effects, and Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) models. This approach is particularly designed to address potential endogeneity issues in remittances and financial development indicators. The analysis reveals that remittances have been a significant growth driver in the Western Balkans, with their impact being more pronounced in countries with less developed financial systems. This finding suggests a substitutive relationship between remittances and financial development. The study also indicates that financial development, measured through Money Supply and Net Interest Margin, has a complex and unclear impact on economic growth. The interaction between remittances and financial development is also a focal point, with significant negative coefficients indicating that in regions with limited financial development, remittances play a crucial role in filling the gaps left by inefficient financial markets. The study contributes to the understanding of how remittances and financial development interact and influence economic growth, providing valuable insights for policy formulation in the Western Balkans.
Autorzy niniejszego artykułu zastosowali w swoich badaniach dynamiczny model panelowy.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to determine the current state and key trends in the field of green banking in Poland, drawing on the theoretical concepts and contemporary practices. DESIGN/METHOD: Using a mixed-methods approach grounded in environmental and financial theory, this study employs statistical, comparative, and qualitative analyses to assess Poland's position on the international stage and institutional initiatives undertaken between 2018 and 2024. RESULTS/FINDINGS: The findings reveal that Polish banks are gradually integrating green banking practices into their operations. International cooperation and EU regulation have proven instrumental in enabling financial institutions to introduce new green finance products and attract additional capital. However, Poland does not rank among the frontrunners in green banking development within the EU, underscoring the need for a more robust regulatory framework and stronger involvement from the central bank to accelerate the progress. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The value of this article lies in its focused analysis of the evolving landscape of green banking in Poland. It bridges a critical gap by combining the theory of sustainable finance and an empirical study of green initiatives of commercial banks. Furthermore, it provides new evidence on the effectiveness of international cooperation in promoting sustainability. By presenting the specific policy recommendations tailored to the Polish financial sector, the study adds significant value to both academics and policymakers seeking to promote sustainable economic growth in green finance markets. Bankowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny (BFG) od 2016 r., jako organ przymusowej restrukturyzacji, może nakładać kary pieniężne na członków organów niektórych instytucji finansowych (m.in. banków, spółdzielczych kas oszczędnościowo-kredytowych) niewykonujących obowiązków sprawozdawczych i informacyjnych związanych z tą restrukturyzacją. W ustawie o BFG określono przesłanki nakładania i maksymalną wysokość kar pieniężnych, a także dyrektywy miarkowania wysokości kary i przeznaczenie wpływów z zapłaconych kar pieniężnych.
This study empirically investigates the relationship between economic freedom and financial development in EU countries. Using panel data covering the years 2000 2017 and employing fixed effects, random effects, and the generalised method of moments (GMM), the paper examines the effect of economic freedom on financial development. The research results demonstrate that greater economic freedom is conducive to financial development in the EU. These findings remain robust to the use of an alternative index of economic freedom. The results imply that policies which promote economic freedom are likely to raise the level of a country's financial development. (original abstract)
Research background: South Africa's tourism industry has been experiencing unstable growth in the past few decades due to different factors. Studies in different countries have documented the significance of information and communications technology (ICT), and financial development towards a country's tourism growth. ICT and financial development may stimulate the growth of South Africa's tourism industry. Purpose: To investigate the extent to which ICT advancements and financial development influence tourism growth in South Africa, given that the country has relatively strong financial and ICT sectors. Research methodology: The study used annual time-series data for the period 1989 to 2019, and the variables are financial development, ICT, and tourism growth. The data were analysed using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. Results: The findings indicate the existence of a long-run relationship among the variables. Results for the long-run estimates show that only ICT has a positive and statistically significant effect on tourism growth. In the short-run, financial development has a positive significant effect on tourism growth, while ICT only registers a significant effect on tourism growth in the fourth lag, albeit negative. The policy implication of these results is that the South African government ought to promote financial development to ensure that money is available and accessible for investment in tourism businesses and for tourist spending. Furthermore, ICT upgrades are required by the government and tourism service providers to enhance tourism products and service accessibility for tourists from wider geographical locations. Novelty: This study expanded the existing literature by assessing the effects of ICT and financial development on South Africa's tourism. (original abstract)
Research background: The relationship between financial development and economic growth has been attracting attention in the field of economics since the times of the "great moderation". Previous empirical studies still fail to put forward a general conclusion on whether and how financial development affects economic growth. This is particularly true due to the lack of empirical research on the matter in question for countries in transition.Purpose of the article: This study aims to contribute to bridging the gap in the financial development-growth nexus in transitional economies. Understanding the mechanism behind financial development and economic growth should assist policymakers in the design of efficient economic policies or avoiding/alleviating financial cycles. Methods: Using Granger causality test in frequency domain, which shows to have more power over standard time domain Granger causality test, as well as gross domestic product (GDP) and the monetary base (M2 - intermediate money), we investigated the finance-growth relationship in 19 Central, East, and Southeast European countries (CESEE) from 1991 to 2017.Findings & Value added: Study results show that financial development is important for growth in CESEE countries, thus supporting the "supply-leading" theories in general for countries in the sample. Our findings indicate that the relationship between financial development and economic growth exists in CESEE countries (with one exception - the Czech Republic) ranging from unidirectional (Albania, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Belarus, Estonia, Macedonia, Russia, Turkey), to bi-directional spectral Granger causality (Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine). The global community has recently reflected on the pressing need for economic growth with environmental stew-ardship. To ensure this balance, the concept of green growth has emerged, offering economic prosperity as well as environmen-tal preservation. This study evaluates the role of financial sector improvement in promoting green growth by analysing panel data for 132 countries from 1990 to 2019. Particularly, this research adds to empirical evidence by analysing the threshold-spe-cific effect of financial development on green growth. This study employs the pooled ordinary least squares method and a dynamic panel threshold estimator. The empirical outcome revealed a U-shaped curve between financial sector development and green growth. Similarly, a U-shaped curve is observed between financial institutions and green growth. The threshold values for financial sector development and financial institutions are 24.57% and 20.94%, respectively. These findings emphasise that after reaching a certain threshold value, higher financial development will direct the economy toward green growth, thus ensur-ing environmental sustainability. However, in the case of development in financial markets, an inverted U-shaped curve is observed with a threshold value of 7.96%.(original abstract)
The prime objective of the current study is to explore the nexus among financial development, market freedom, political stability, economic growth and CO2 emissions in ASEAN countries. The present study has attempted to examine the asymmetric association among financial development, CO2 emissions, and economic growth. The data for the variables are obtained from the World Bank. The CO2 emission is measured in kilotons. The Johansen cointegration technique has been used for analyzing the long-term association. The results of the political freedom model indicate that in countries where there will be political stability, their CO2 emission will be low. A number of research papers have investigated the relationship between the environment and political freedom. A positive relationship has been found by most of the studies; however, these studies have not taken CO2 emissions into account. The probability of making agreements at international conferences is directly linked with the political freedom to lower the level of global pollutants. This study proves that the implementation of such agreements has started recently and a significant impact of political freedom on emissions cannot yet be finalized with the limited data available. Financial development appears to have a significant relationship with carbon emission. This study will be helpful for policymakers and researchers in understanding the issues related to financial development, market freedom, political stability, and economic growth and CO2 emissions in ASEAN countries. Objective: This article empirically investigates the role played by financial development in determining the relationship between working capital financing and firms' profitability. Research Design & Methods: Employing data of publicly listed manufacturing firms in five ASEAN countries - namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand - spanning 2009-2018, resulted in 6183 firm-years observations. This study conducts an analysis using the two-steps generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator. Findings: The inverted U-shape effect of working capital financing on firm profitability is confirmed. Moreover, new evidence appeared that firms which operate in more financially developed regions have the opportunity to utilise a greater percentage of short-term debt without destroying their profitability. Implications & Recommendations: Corporate managers should avoid using excessive short-term debt to finance their working capital requirement as the risk of refinancing and interest outweigh its benefit. Secondly, given the significant role played by financial development, policy makers should give priority to financial reforms and development to ensure firms have access to finance and hence foster their growth for the benefit of the economy. Contribution & Value Added: This article contributes to the existing literature in two ways. Firstly, this is the first study to analyse the role of financial development on working capital financing and profitability relationship. Secondly, the study extends the insight of this research area onto a large emerging region that has never been studied before: the ASEAN region. (original abstract)
Subject and purpose of work: This study focuses on the effects of financial development on economic growth across two groups of countries with different income levels and aims to control for the roles of the rule of law and human development levels in this relationship. The study sample covering the period 2002-2022 consists of 40 lower-middle-income and 42 upper-middle-income countries selected countries. Materials and methods: Analysis was conducted using the method of moment quantile regression, and the validity of the findings tested using simultaneous quantile regression. Results: Because of the analysis, the level of human development and the rule of law have a negative impact on economic growth in both country groups. According to the most interesting finding of the study, the effect of financial development on economic growth is asymmetric. Conclusions: For both groups of countries, challenges in achieving human development and the rule of law are significant obstacles to achieving inclusive economic growth through financial markets and institutions.(original abstract)
W dalszej części rozdziału dokonano przeglądu badań empirycznych, obrazując ewolucję, jaka nastąpiła zarówno w odniesieniu do stosowanych metod badawczych, jak i uzyskiwanych wyników. (fragment tekstu)
China's robust economic growth serves as a key driver propelling the global economy forward. As such, understanding the factors influencing its sustainable economic growth remains a critical concern for stakeholders. In this context, this study aims to investigate the key determinants of China's sustainable economic growth. Specifically, it examines the effect of environmental quality, institutional quality and financial development on sustainability in the Chinese context. To achieve this, the study employs a range of econometric analyses, including Ordinary Least Square (OLS), Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), and Quantile Regression (QR), using data spanning 2002 to 2019. The empirical findings reveal that environmental quality, institutional quality and financial development significantly contribute to China's sustainable economic growth. Additionally, the interaction effects of the institutional environment provide nuanced insights into the relationship. This study offers valuable implications for policymakers, highlighting the need to prioritize impactful financial inclusion over mere financial sector expansion, alongside focusing on other growth-enhancing initiatives. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence of the interaction effect of the institutional environment within this framework. (original abstract)
It is shown that political business-cycle approach to a political and institutional analysis of large exchange reserves hoarding is not full story. It is stressed, the choice of the central bank to accumulate reserves or not is not defined per se. Such choice is a consequence of political and economic consensus on the design of the mechanism of macrofinancial stability and the channels of macroeconomic adjustment. It is shown that political regimes are important proxies to understand why countries differ in incentives to hoard as well as accumulate in the long-run. At the same time, while autocracies outperforme democracies in reserves hoarding, the situation is not so simple. Institutional factors matter. This means that heterogeneity across political regimes may also play a role. The analysis of reserves distribution shows that autocracies are less homogenous. These results are substantiated by general multi-factor regression. While large hoarding is more typical of the countries with large GDP per capita, less democratic political regime and less independent central banks do not choose flexible exchange rates; i.e. only autocracy with some threshold level of development ( including political and macroeconomic stability) can hoard reserves sustainably. Autocracies have better preconditions for reserves hoarding only when they are able to push a prudent macroeconomic policy. At the same time, democracies have better preconditions for alternative institutional paths, under which some alternative channels of macroeconomic adjustment could potentially arise. This finding has strong practical implication. The independence of the central banks as well as the structural reforms addressed to financial development support macroeconomic adjustment with lower level of exchange reserves. (original abstract)
W badaniu zastosowano analizę regresji wielokrotnej w celu prawidłowego oszacowania modeli i uzyskania solidnych wyników. Materiały i metody: W badaniu zastosowano analizę regresji wielokrotnej w celu prawidłowego oszacowania modeli i uzyskania solidnych wyników. Purpose: The article considers country-level governance factors (legal/regulatory system and financial development) and ownership concentration that impact the value of non-financial firms in Central European nations, specifically by describing a study done in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Methodology: A fixed effect panel data regression analysis was applied to a strongly balanced panel data using a collection of six diverse Central European countries' non-financial firms across the sample period of 2010-2020. Results: According to regression analysis, the legal and regulatory system as well as financial development have a positive relationship with firm value. The firm's value rises as the legal and regulatory system improves. Furthermore, the growth of financial markets adds to the firm's value. However, our study reveals a negative relationship between ownership concentration and firm value, which indicates that ownership concentration is too high to allow for effective supervision, implying that more ownership concentration lowers firm value, as the expropriation theory suggests. Originality: The study examines the value of a firm by incorporating both country- and firm-level factors, which broadens the current literature's insight. Implications: Overall, our findings add to the literature on the value of non-financial firms by providing new significant information. Some of the recommendations may be beneficial to the long-term success of non-financial companies. (original abstract)
