Content available remote Signaling Theory in Dividend Policy
100%
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the signaling theory of dividend policy in companies that are listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the literature review of signaling theory in dividend policy, the research hypothesis was stated: There is no relationship between future earnings and current dividend payments in the financial statements of Warsaw listed companies during the studied period 2010-2021. Accordingly, an empirical model was built which consisted of an explanatory variable (dividend in subsequent years) and explanatory variables (earnings in subsequent years). In addition, a research questionnaire was conducted for individual investors who have been investing in the Warsaw Stock Exchange for more than one year. Findings: The estimation results of the econometric model confirmed that there is no relationship between the dividend paid and the profit of a given company. On the other hand, the survey results indicated that dividend policy is an important element in the decision-making process of individual investors in the stock market. Originality/value: The research in the paper is complementary in nature - the signaling theory in dividend policy was examined in a multifaceted manner - econometric testing of the model and qualitative research in the form of a survey among 100 investors.(original abstract)

Content available remote Nonpayers also matter. On Lintner's dividend partial adjustment model estimation
100%
The dividend partial adjustment model proposed by J. Lintner (1956) is still one of the most widely used tools for analysing the dividend policy of companies. This model should be estimated only on the basis of observations in which dividend payments were recorded. This causes the sample selection to be not random and so the parameters estimator of the Lintner's model to be inconsistent. However, the level of the payouts of the companies selected for the Lintner's model may be affected by the decisions of dividend nonpayers not selected for this model. Some authors noted this contradiction, but there are no effective methods to solve it. In the article, to solve this problem, the Heckman (1976) sample self-selection model was proposed, which consists of two equations: the participation equation, which is a probit model of the propensity to pay dividends, and the outcome equation, which is Lintner's partial adjustment model. This was examined using an unbalanced panel of 112 companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The results of the estimation of the Heckman model confirm that the inclusion of information about companies not paying dividends in the Lintner's model results in a significant reduction of the dividend target payout ratio and speed of adjustment. Estimated target dividend payout ratio and the speed adjustment for the entire market may be important information for companies' management when developing their own dividend policies.(original abstract)
This research paper aims at assessing whether managers adapt their dividend policies to the changing preferences of investors, as predicted by the catering theory of dividends. To answer this question, we used an modified approach based on the method proposed by Baker and Wurgler [2004a] in their studies on dividend catering. We noted a systematic decline in percentage of companies that paid out dividends in a sample of American publicly-traded companies, excluding companies of low capitalization and low profitability. Next, we observed a parallel declining tendency in dividend premiums in our sample. The decrease in the readiness to pay out dividends among companies on the American market can be linked to the fact that investors have assigned less weight to dividends over the years, and so in turn they were less willing to reward dividend-paying companies with higher valuations. Periodic fluctuations in investor mood with regard to dividend-paying companies, and the resulting changes in their relative valuation, influence the propensity of managers to pay out dividends. We showed a statistically significant relationship between changes in dividend premiums in one year, and the proportion of companies that paid out dividends in the following year. Additionally, it looks like companies try to compensate shareholders by paying out dividends in years of worse performing market and are less likely to distribute their earnings when shareholders gain on rising stock price. We found a negative correlation between the change in proportion of companies paying out dividends and changes in the S&P500 index. However, this does not seem to reflect investor preferences and taste for dividends. We found no statistically significant correlations between the change of the dividend premium and changes in the S&P500 index and, surprisingly, we observed relatively worse valuation of dividend-paying firms in years of market downturn. In terms of originality, our work contributes to the ongoing dividend puzzle discussion in a number of ways. First, we use a sample of American companies after excluding small capitalization stocks. Second, we assume a time lag between a shift in investor preferences and a change in corporate payout policy. Finally, our studies also account for the impact of general market conditions on dividend decisions. (original abstract)
(fragment tekstu)
Research background: Dividends have been the subject of scientific research for decades. However, many aspects of payout policy are still controversial, and research provides contradictory results. One research area is the impact of the ownership structure on dividend policy. Although many scientific studies on this subject have been conducted, there is still a lack of research on the impact of managerial ownership on adjusting the dividend payout to investor sentiment. It was this research gap that motivated us to investigate the issue.Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to evaluate how managerial ownership affects the disposition of companies to adjust their dividend payouts to investor sentiment. Achieving that objective provides stock market investors with additional information and allows for its practical implications as they seek the best investment opportunities. Methods: The main method of investigation is a panel regression model with random effects. This model is used based on the Breusch-Pagan test and the Hausman test, while the information criteria of Akaike, Schwarz, and Hannan-Quinn are also taken into consideration. Additionally, descriptive statistics and the Pearson correlation coefficient are used. The research sample consists of Polish companies from the electromechanical industry sector that are listed on the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) in the period 2009-2018.Findings & Value added: Our findings reveal that: 1) an increase in dividend premium results in a higher payout in order to cater to investor sentiment; 2) if the manager holds the greatest number of shares, the catering effect weakens. The main contribution of the paper is a new approach to the catering theory of dividends, which includes the impact of managerial ownership. (original abstract)
Ponadto w artykule zostały zaprezentowane praktyczne wskazówki odnoście użycia koncepcji faktycznych i potencjalnych dywidend w wycenie.(abstrakt oryginalny)

This study compares firms' dividend policy antecedents in four countries. The author surveys managers of 230 companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange that paid dividends over the 2001-12 period and compares the findings to survey reports from the USA, Canada, and Norway. The main antecedents of dividend policy in these countries are the level of current earnings, their stability over time, the level of expected earnings and the pattern of past dividends. The last factor is of little importance for Polish managers, as the history of dividend payouts in Polish-listed companies is brief. The establishment of factors that shape the dividend policy in public companies has crucial importance in global financial markets. Investors make cash transfers to markets that ensure a high return on invested capital. Orders from foreign investors generate almost 50% of the turnover on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Therefore, in their decisions on the division of earnings, Polish companies should be guided by similar considerations as those displayed by companies in developed economies that seek to attract foreign investors. The study expands on the existing survey research on dividends and provides new evidence from managers of companies in Poland. (original abstract)

Content available remote Powiązanie strategii wypłaty dywidendy z rentownością kapitału własnego
75%
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań empirycznych nad związkiem stopnia koncentracji własności i kontroli z regularnością i wysokością wypłacanej dywidendy pieniężnej.
Motivation: The ownership structure is a frequently undertaken research issue on the dividend determinants. However, there are not many scientific studies conducted on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) which investigate the ownership structure of dividend payers in the context of board characteristics (i.e. board composition, board independence or chairman entrenchment). Therefore, a research gap has been observed in this area and an appropriate study has been conducted. Aim: The aim of the paper is to investigate the links between the ownership structure of publicly traded companies and the dividend pay-outs in the context of board characteristics. Results: Empirical research has been conducted on a group of 354 non-financial companies listed on the WSE. The results of the study indicate that in the companies that pay out dividend one can observe a greater share of both the institutional investors and the State Treasury. The board of such companies is bigger, the board members more often hold shares and the chairman occupies the position for a longer time. Moreover, the propensity to pay dividend and dividend amount increase if there is an increase in institutional ownership, board duality and chairman entrenchment. (original abstract)
This study investigates the informational effect of stock liquidity on dividend payouts. Using a sample of Polish listed companies during 2000 - 2012, I do not find a relation between stock liquidity and dividend payouts. This result is robust to the use of alternative measures of liquidity, and holds after we control for endogeneity concerns. In accord with my hypothesis that stock liquidity provides information and increases insiders' incentive to pay out dividends, I do not find that the relation between stock liquidity and dividend payouts is more pronounced when the information environment is opaque, and when conflict between controlling shareholders and minority investors is severe. The aim of this study is to show the dependencies occurring between dividend policy and the liquidity of shares of a company. The basic thesis of this study is that decisions on dividend payments positively affect the liquidity of the shares of a company. (original abstract)
Research into the determinants of companies' decisions about paying out dividends, which has been described in the Polish specialist literature, concentrates mainly on the dividends actually paid out. The research presented in the article refers to declarations of the companies included in their dividend policies. The aim of the article is to present an attitude to dividend policy exhibited by the companies listed on the Warsaw stock exchange. A particular attempt was made at identifying various formulas of constructing dividend policies by the companies and the declared conditions for dividend payments and their amounts. 118 dividend companies took part in the research and they were selected from among the companies listed on the Warsaw stock exchange in the years 2006-2012. The authors have analysed the dividend policy of the companies in terms of its components and the way it was formulated, as well as the determinants of decisions about dividend payments declared by the companies. The results of the analysis were referred to the types of strategies of the dividend policy presented in the specialist literature. The research results indicate that the boards of many companies do not consider formulating and publicising the principles of making dividend payments to be a relevant area of investor relations. The dividend policy of the companies is usually formulated too generally, with the use of general statements. Satisfying capital needs for the planned development processes appears to be a basic determinant of the distribution of profit, which is why residual dividend policy is prevalent in the analysed companies.(original abstract)
