Purpose: This article examines the ecological risks posed by pharmaceutical pollutants in freshwater resources and evaluates policy responses for mitigating their environmental impact. Methodology/Approach: The study synthesises recent empirical findings and regulatory reports, with emphasis on European freshwater monitoring data and ecotoxicological assessments. Findings: Pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, NSAIDs, and hormones are consistently detected in surface waters at nanogram- to microgram-level concentrations, contributing to microbial community shifts, reproductive disruption in aquatic species, and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Existing regulatory frameworks address only a limited subset of compounds, resulting in persistent contamination even in regions with advanced wastewater treatment. Research Limitations/Implications: Data gaps remain regarding long-term synergistic effects and low-dose chronic exposure. Practical/Social Implications: Improved wastewater management and One Health-oriented governance could reduce ecological and public health risks. Originality/Value: The article highlights systemic regulatory shortcomings and identifies priority areas for sustainable freshwater policy reform.(original abstract)
Objective: The research objective of this article is to evaluate Luxembourg's entrepreneurship position and performance, and compare its entrepreneurship profile with other countries, and then to investigate the main bottleneck that holds back Luxembourg's growth in terms of entrepreneurship.Research Design & Methods: The Global Entrepreneurship Index (GEI) approach was employed in this research. This methodology focuses on institutional and individual dimensions of entrepreneurship that are linked to efficiency. Furthermore, we used a unique feature of the GEI, the Penalty for Bottleneck (PFB) methodology, to infer which entrepreneurial elements should be tackled and how much effort is needed to alleviate the bottleneck of the Luxembourg entrepreneurial profile.Findings: The study results show no improvement in Luxembourg's profile in terms of entrepreneurship from 2014 to 2016, although it has a very high GDP per capita than those with GEI higher than it. The "start-up skills" were the main bottleneck in terms of entrepreneurship performance, which lowers the overall GEI score of Luxembourg. Therefore, the start-up skills should be improved 100% to become 0.23 in order to enhance Luxembourg's GEI score by 10 points; consequently, the new overall GEI becomes 68.3.Implications & Recommendations: To increase and develop entrepreneurship programs in Luxembourg, the responsible authorities in Luxembourg must adapt entrepreneurship programs that target various groups of society, especially with many immigrants. It should also facilitate access to entrepreneurial and support programs to enable aspiring entrepreneurs to create their businesses. Luxembourg should also focus on refugees by strengthening the entrepreneurial programs available to them and cooperating with NGOs to overcome obstacles such as the language barrier.Contribution & Value Added: This paper highlights Luxembourg's vulnerable performance using a new approach that combines single and institutional variables in a unique model. Additionally, what sets this research apart is the use of PFB, which is also used to uncover the components of entrepreneurship that need to be addressed. (original abstract)
In the current legal system concerning the environmental legislation in Poland, environmental impact assessment (EIA) constitutes an essential tool for the protection of ecosystems. A report that is being prepared within EIA includes different methods to assess the impact of a given project on the environment. The combination of the currently used methods and ecosystem services assessment may allow for a better understanding of the consequences of the environmental change. This article presents the theoretical framework of integrating the ecosystem services assessment into the EIA procedure and its use in a report on the environmental impact assessment of a given project(original abstract)
Ogromną wagę krajobrazu podkreślają badania Costanzy i innych.
(fragment tekstu)
Urban expansion in Latin-American cities is faster than urban planning. In order to implement sustainable planning the capacity of peri-urban areas to provide ecosystem services must be evaluated in the context of competing urbanization and conservation pressures. In this study we analyzed the effect of urban expansion on peri-urban vegetation of the Metropolitan Area of Santiago and what ecosystem services are provided by El Panul, land rich in biodiversity embedded in the fringe of the city. The city has lost vegetation while urbanized areas grow. Under this context, we evaluated the multi-functionality of El Panul through the quantification of three ecosystem services (ES): sense of place through the interviews of 60 residents, recreation via GIS analyses, and local climate regulation determined with air temperature measurements. El Panul increased the provision of urban green spaces, where inhabitants recognize and appreciate ES, and it plays a significant role in mitigating the urban heat island on summer nights. ES have emerged as a concept and framework for evaluating competing urban development alternatives. (original abstract)
Wnioski wypływające z metody i jej ograniczenia omówiono w kontekście praktyki przygotowania operatów ochrony walorów krajobrazowych.(abstrakt oryginalny)
To sustain cultural ecosystem services and cultural heritage it is important to go in depth in the science policy interface, because efficient governance mechanisms emerge from the cooperation of scientists and practitioners. In the Basque Country, we are on the road towards adaptive and resilient landscape management through an integrative approach that enhances the link between science, policy-making and society. Key elements of this approach are: The establishment from the outset of a transdisciplinary community of practice; the creation of specific transdisciplinar working groups to go in depth with concrete applicability measures; a strong outreach strategy and educational programs development; and last but not least, the involvement of stakeholders at multiple stage of the process. Diverse research lines are carried out during the process (e.g. mapping ecosystems services, analyzing social perceptions), whose results are combined to help identify response options for sustainable landscape. Relevant policy implementations of the results of this broad research are already taking place in the Basque Country. The proved utility of this working mechanism makes key agents to continue involved, and to attract more agents into the process. These transdisciplinary processes facilitate the creation of synergies and win-win solutions towards sustainable management of cultural ecosystem services. (original abstract)
I często odkrywamy tam zadziwiająco dużo gatunków, obecnych w znacznej liczbie osobników. (fragment tekstu)
This study identifies and analyses ecosystem services (ES) in the context of their applicability for drought and flood prevention measures planning undertaken within the framework of small water retention. The results illustrate that ES classified as regulation and maintenance are the most significant because they, one the one hand, contribute the most to improving the flood retention capacity of river catchment areas, whilst on the other hand they provide desirable values that people derive from nature. Furthermore, we also find that the small water retention reservoir is a solution which assures both the best weather hazard prevention as well as the greatest number of benefits. (original abstract)

The paper summarizes four presentations of the session "Environment and Wellbeing: The Role of Ecosystems for Sustainable Development" at the international conference "Sustainability in the Water- Energy-Food Nexus" held on 19-20th May 2014 in Bonn, Germany. The aim of the session was to present current stresses on ecosystem services imposed by global development trajectory, potential impacts on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and pathways to achieve SDGs. All four presentations agreed that global ecosystem services are under increasing pressure from degradation and may not be able to meet the growing Water-Energy-Food (WEF) demands especially for the developing world. Three examples from Tanzania, Cambodia and Niger made attempt to understand how governance policies attributed to natural resource depletion such as forestry and common grazing. The examples showed that governance policies favoring economic development are heavily contributing to clearing up natural resource bases. As a result, there were increasing conflicts among different resource user groups. Two other presentations introduce conceptual pathways to achieve the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under current resource stressed regime. The pathways suggested global technologies, decentralized solutions and consumption changes as the major means of achieving global sustainability and poverty eradication without any major trade-offs.

Przeważają w niej gatunki rodzime (71,1%) nad antropofitami (28,9%). Wśród antropofitów 15,1% stanowią kenofity, 10,5% archeofit, a 3,3% diafity. O synantropizacji flory doliny Kłodnicy świadczy wysoki udział gatunków ruderalnych (38,8%) i niewielki udział gatunków nadwodnych (4,6%), a także wysokie wartości wskaźników antropofityzacji (28,9%) i kenofityzacji (15,1%). Rośliny te stale zwiększają zajmowany areał, wnikają do zbiorowisk roślinnych i eliminują gatunki rodzime, w skrajnych przypadkach tworząc zwarte jednogatunkowe płaty(abstrakt oryginalny)

The UNESCO San Francisco Rock Paintings polygon within El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve in the Baja California Peninsula derives its moisture from the North American monsoon. There, ranchers have depended on the desert since the 18th century. More recently, the desert has depended on the environmental stewardship of the ranchers who have allayed mining exploitation and archaeological looting. Using a Rapid Assessment Procedure (RAP), climate data, and geographical information, sustainability was assessed and foreseeable risks identified, on behalf of the Reserve. The results showed that the costs of stewardship were in terms of water appropriation and livestock herbivory. The socio-ecological system also faced hydrological risks derived from runoff, high evaporation rates and climate change. Additional risks stemmed from the increasing global demand for minerals, including hydrocarbons, found in the Reserve. These external drivers could substantially alter the attitudes of the ranchers or the land tenure. Land abandonment might become possible as children and women seemed to out-migrate from the polygon. Solutions were identified based on the supply and demand for water and should enhance resilience via watershed management and in-ranch water appropriate technologies. (original abstract)
There are numerous ( though spread unevenly ) small run-off-free bodies of water in the Parsęta basin as well as in the upper Parsęta catchment. The geoecosystems of these non-run-off bodies serve various functions in the geographic environment ; they are particularly important in terms of shaping catchment retention and water circulation. They quickly react to environmental conditions, especially to changes in land use and land cover in the catchment and the supply of pollutants in waters. Radomyskie Lake is a small body of water in the upper Parsęta catchment within which radical changes in land use and changes in the chemistry of the lake waters have taken place over the last 30 years. The concentration of ion components in the lake waters has become significantly reduced compared with that in the early 1980s. A comparison with Czarne Lake - a similar body of water in the upper Parsęta catchment revealed that these ongoing changes have two causes : afforestation of agriculturally cultivated catchment areas around Radomyskie Lake and consequently reduced supply of fertilizer as well as a drop in precipitation mineral content, which had been noted by researchers for 20 years. Radomyskie Lake is experiencing the stage of re-naturalization and its evolution is moving towards a peat-bog geoecosystem. (original abstract)
