Objective: The objective of this research is to elaborate a framework that explores the relationships between the performance of high-growth enterprises and the characteristics of regional entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs). Research Design & Methods: This conceptual article adopts a multidimensional and profiling approach to the characteristics of EEs. The methodology is based on the combined narrative and systematic literature reviews. Findings: Five propositions as to the relationship between growth and performance of firms in the regional context, as well as to the impact of various regional profiles on the growth and profitability of firms were elaborated. The final outcome of this synthesis is a research framework. Implications & Recommendations: The implication of the proposed framework includes the development of testable hypotheses for further empirical investigation. The recommendation is to adopt a profiling method of assessing the effect of EEs. Contribution & Value Added: The research contributes by setting out a direction for empirical studies that would test the impact of EE profiles and result in their quantitative taxonomies. The value added consists in reflecting the heterogeneity of EEs and their output evaluation rather than input characteristics. (original abstract)
Teoria złożoności, powstała w latach 90. XX wieku, zyskała wielu zwolenników, którzy wskazują na jej zastosowanie m.in. w naukach ekonomicznych.
(fragment tekstu)
The main aim of the monograph is to conceptualise the construct of business ecosystem identity. Its achievement required that the concept of organisational identity be included in the context of a specific network, such as the business ecosystem. More specific aims are as follows: to conceptualize organizational identity construct, as well as, network identity and business ecosystem; to form business ecosystem identity construct; to find if there is any opportunity for its operationalization and to investigate potential methods and tools for its future analysis. Facing the complexity of the proposed construct of the business ecosystem identity, the main research problem deals with explaining whether the construct of business ecosystem identity is valuable in the context of filling the research gap over the dynamics and survival of the business ecosystem. Research questions are as follows: 1) what is business ecosystem identity?, 2) what epistemological perspective should be adopted with reference to the proposed construct?, 3) what level of analysis is appropriate for its analysis?, and finally, 4) which research categories can be used to conceptualize the construct of business ecosystem identity? To find answers to the research questions relating to the main aim of the whole monograph the ontological bases and epistemological foundations of organizational identity (Chapter 1), business ecosystems (Chapter 2) and network identity (Chapter 3) needed to be reviewed. Specific properties of these constructs were generated and, above all, the characteristics of an ecosystem: re-emergence, self-organisation, co-adaptation, and co-evolution, were specified (Chapter 2). Measurable identity-related research categories, influencing business ecosystem survival, were identified (Chapter 3). It was assumed that the construct of business ecosystem identity (BEI) could be described and explored with the use of research categories such as: the identity strength, organizational/network identification, identity dualism, and ecosystem survival. Further, the conceptual approach to business ecosystem identity was the issue to validation adopting exemplification research throughout an illustrative case study (Chapter 4). The conducted research enabled methodological specification of the exploration of BEI, that is 1) data sources, 2) research methods, 3) object of research, namely a business ecosystem, and 4) research categories of business ecosystem identity and tools for their analysis. The form of explanatory reasoning was abduction (after: [Peirce 1903/1955; Reichertz 2007]), leading to predictions [Peirce 1997], presuppositions, which can be tested further [Urbański 2009; Ciesielski 2014; 2015]. As an effect of the conducted qualitative research, presuppositions were finally made as a starting point for further research: P1': A strong identity of the leader is determined by the perception of a hybrid business ecosystem identity. P2': The perception of the hybrid business ecosystem identity contributes to a strong identification with the business ecosystem. P3': A low assessment of the power of the leader's identity contributes to the lack of the utilitarian BE identity. P4': A low assessment of the power of business ecosystem identity contributes to the lack of the utilitarian BE identity. P5': There are strong relations between the power of business ecosystem identity and its leader(s). P6': The power of business ecosystem identity determines the survival of the whole ecosystem. P7': A stronger identity of leaders contributes to the increased chances of ecosystem survival. P8': A stronger identification with the business ecosystem contributes to the increased chances of its survival. The methodological framework was adopted to the convention of the qualitative approach, focusing on conceptual thinking and theory building rather than on hypotheses testing (e.g. [Bartunek, Rynes, Ireland 2006]). The presented qualitative approach is interpretative one and consists of a heterogeneous set of complementary approaches [Smith 2015; Gehman et al. 2017], having regard to the criteria for pursuing methodological rigor in interpretative research [Czakon (ed.) 2015, pp. 95-99]. The greatest epistemological contribution of the conducted studies is the conceptualisation of business ecosystem identity as a construct 1) allowing for the dynamics of identity and business ecosystem, and 2) using measureable research categories. The BEI construct should be considered significant for future theoretical and empirical research since it 3) enables the exploration of the business ecosystem survival mechanisms, which was empirically inaccessible before, and 4) explication of the business ecosystem boundaries, which are considered incomprehensible. BEI also opens a path to the research on 5) the direction of the relations of the proposed research categories and 6) the power of their significance from the viewpoint of co-adaptation, re-emergence, co-evolution, and self-organisation. The conceptualisation of business ecosystem identity provides room for extensive analysis of the categories of its survival, dynamics, and development mechanisms. A real challenge for the development of the researched concept seems to be the macro level of the analysis - the ecosystem network.(original abstract)
Określono zestaw założeń i wskazano obszary przyszłych badań nad zjawiskiem FE. (abstrakt oryginalny)
A dynamic business environment presents a high degree of uncertainty for the evolving world. This calls for new business practices. Organisations' supply chain management must address disruptions and uncertainties arising from globalisation. The study's major objectives were to understand the role of supply chain practices in moderating the influence of supply chain disruptions on supply chain performance and environmental uncertainty on supply chain performance. This research is set in the context of two South Indian states, which account for 94% of India's coir manufacturing and export. Partial least squares-based structural equation modelling was used to test the hypotheses in the work. The moderating effect of supply chain practice on the relationship between environmental uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, and supply chain performance has not been confirmed. Hence, this finding calls for adopting disruption-resilient practices in the supply chain management by organisations to stay competitive in an evolving world and an environment of uncertainty.(original abstract)

Purpose: Despite the recent surge of interest in the concept of business ecosystem its nature remains poorly understood, with various conceptualizations developed in separate streams of literature. The aim of the paper is to develop an integrated perspective on ecosystems that would help managers better understand changing organizational landscape and inform strategic decision making. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is built on a narrative conflict between the conceptualizations of business ecosystem as either firm environment or governance structure, and on discrepancy in treatment of coordination and other strategic interactions. We first map out the conceptual landscape of the topic, comparing ecosystems with alternative arrangements (industries, and markets and hierarchies, respectively). Then we introduce and apply the concept of strategic interactions as a novel theoretical perspective to design an integrated framework of business ecosystems. Findings: Firm-level strategic interactions (competition, cooperation and coordination) taking place in the ecosystem (viewed as a form of environment) can and should get into strategic interactions with ecosystem-level coordination mechanisms (ecosystem as a governance structure), affecting on the one hand competitiveness of individual members of the ecosystem and the whole structure, and, on the other, boundaries of the ecosystem. Research limitations/implications: Propositions concerning the interface between firm-level strategic interactions and ecosystem-level governance open up new lines of inquiry for management and organizational scholars and computer scientists, and invite their cooperation, e.g. in algorithmic governance. Practical implications: Richer understanding of the nature of ecosystems helps managers make better informed strategic decisions concerning the nature of relations with other organizations. Originality/value: The paper presents new theoretical arguments on the hybrid nature of ecosystems. It emphasizes an increased role of coordination in strategy and ecosystem development and calls for its wider coverage by strategy scholars. (original abstract)
The emergence and subsequent popularization of lean manufacturing have become one of the most significant for improving the efficiency and productivity of operations. The use of lean manufacturing tools and methods leads to the elimination of waste in the organization. Traditional information systems that allow organizations to share information about resources while managing process performance and traceability have a number of disadvantages such as security, interoperability, and transparency. Currently, distributed ledger technology (block- chain) is widely used for this purpose. This article presents a study of decentralized management of the implementation of a distributed ledger infrastructure, which is selected based on the characteristics of the production system. This study proposes a framework that analyzes lean production methods using simulation and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to accommodate the underlying multi-objective decision-making problem. The current study examines the impact of the simultaneous application of RCA technology, lean manufacturing methods, and distributed ledger technology on the total time, costs, and time of production processes. This paper examines possible aids of performance measurement to the evolution in production ecosystems. A conceptual solution is proposed which derives from the potential of exponential technologies, theory and practice. By adopting an ecosystem approach, a twofold setup of performance has been designed that addresses both the performance of actors and the performance of ecosystem. The proposed mechanism applies Big Data and machine learning. The proof of concept was supported by a prototype of the virtual environment.(original abstract)
In order to understand the role which accelerators play in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and more broadly in the regional and national economic development, it is important to define it first. Although there are several definitions, the most sophisticated ones are presented below. (fragment of text)
The global, innovative firms have been using new tools to create relations based on value-changing, especially knowledge because global customers are more exacting and they take decisions more knowingly. The systemic business ecosystems show the possibility to gain synergy effects that are a result of combination of competencies of systemic partners. As it is shown by research results, the entities of studied IT sector implement the goal in the so-called business eco-systems based on knowledge diffusion, especially trough the Competence Centres. The results have practical application due to the fact that the article contains practices of sectoral leaders. The social value is shown by finding innovative way of knowledge diffusion.(original abstract)

Objective: The objective of the article is to identify and analyse the configurations of regional entrepreneurial ecosystems that lead to high levels of entrepreneurship in urban and non-urban regions.Research Design & Methods: This study employed This study employed necessary condition analysis (NCA) and a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA) to reveal how different combinations of six elements of entrepreneurial ecosystems (EE): culture, supports, human capital, policy, markets, and finance, support the presence of high levels of entrepreneurship across 42 urban and non-urban regions in Colombia and Ecuador.Findings: The NCA results revealed that no single element was necessary for the presence of high levels of regional business density. Conversely, some ecosystem elements become necessary when the expected ecosystem outcome is high levels of regional share of high-growth firms. Sufficiency analysis revealed several distinct com-binations of elements that lead to high entrepreneurship levels in both urban and non-urban regions.Implications & Recommendations: The findings of this study are valuable for researchers interested in under-standing the complexity of EEs and for policymakers. This study provides empirical evidence of the differentiated relevance of EEs' elements depending on the urban-rural context. Moreover, results suggest that a one-size-fits-all approach for entrepreneurship policymaking might be inadequate since the requirements for achieving high levels of entrepreneurial development are substantially different between urban and non-urban regions.Contribution & Value Added: This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on entrepreneurial ecosystems complexity, particularly regarding the questions of how ecosystem elements interact to support entrepreneur-ship in a particular place and whether all ecosystem elements are equally important for entrepreneurship. Materiał badawczy stanowiły dane i informacje zawarte w publikacjach i raportach instytucji wspierających rozwój startupów i innowacji (m.in. NCBR, PARP, PFR, Startup Poland), strony internetowe publicznych programów wsparcia (zawierające regulaminy i dokumentację konkursową) oraz liczne strony internetowe prywatnych podmiotów (zawierające regulaminy i dokumentację programów). Analizy zebranego materiału dokonano pod kątem bezzwrotnych form wsparcia, zakresu podmiotowego i przedmiotowego oraz wielkości finansowania. W konsekwencji przeprowadzonej analizy wskazano mankamenty bezzwrotnego systemu finansowania startupów w Polsce.
Porównanie ekosystemów start-upowych tych trzech krajów ujawniło zarówno wspólne, jak i specyficzne cechy każdego z nich, podkreślając, w jaki sposób różnice w warunkach politycznych, gospodarczych i kulturowych kształtują rozwój start-upów.
