Rolnictwo ekologiczne, określane zgodnie z prawodawstwem Unii Europejskiej również jako biologiczne, organiczne lub biodynamiczne, to system gospodarowania o zrównoważonej produkcji roślinnej i zwierzęcej w obrębie gospodarstwa, oparty na środkach pochodzenia biologicznego i mineralnego nieprzetworzonych technologicznie. Podstawową zasadą jest odrzucenie w procesie produkcji żywności środków chemii rolnej, weterynaryjnej i spożywczej. W artykule omówiono idee, cele i podstawowe zasady rolnictwa ekologicznego oraz regulacje prawne i stan rolnictwa ekologicznego w Polsce na tle Unii Europejskiej.

Ecological agriculture, called also biological, organic or biodynamic husbandry, is a farming system characterized by balanced plant and animal production within a farm, based on unprocessed materials of biological and mineral origin. In the paper the basic goals and principles of ecological agriculture are presented. They enable practical realization of the ecodevelopment principles, activate the natural resources of a farm and ensure durable fertility of soil, good health of animals and high biological quality of crops. On the eve of Poland's integration into the EU special attention is focused on the state of our legal regulations concerning that sphere. On the basis of the area of ecological culture and the number of farms in the EU countries and in Poland, an analysis of the state of our agriculture as compared with that in the EU is made. Also the position of Polish ecological agriculture in relation to other countries, the candidates for the EU membership, is presented. Transformations which will take place in Poland after May 1,2004 will make it necessary for a large group of farmers to depart from conventional husbandry. The present paper is an attempt to answer the question why it is worthwhile, in this situation, to take an interest in food production using ecological methods. (original abstract)
