Studies of self-employment determinants comprise the effects of business cycle, changing social structures or legal framework, industrial organization regulations and government policies. The paper contributes to the empirical literature by analyzing the effects of trends and cyclical fluctuation on the development of self-employment in a transition economy. The authors estimate entrepreneurship choice models filled with panel quarterly data taken from labour force surveys for Poland - a country with one of the highest self-employment rates in CEECs and the EU - across the time span 1995q1-2008q4, and trace changes in the marginal effects estimators. They find that self-employment as survival strategy is directly linked with the current situation in the labour market, and the choice of this type of employment is more often in the periods of the labour market contraction. They also demonstrate that young university graduates prefer wage employment to entrepreneurship. (original abstract)
Badania determinant samozatrudnienia uwzględniają m.in. takie czynniki jak cykle koniunkturalne, zmiany struktur społecznych, uwarunkowań prawnych czy polityk rządowych. Niniejsza analiza podejmuje próbę ocenienia jaki jest wpływ długofalowego procesu transformacji oraz krótkofalowych wahań cyklicznych na skłonność do podejmowania samozatrudnienia, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem decyzji osób młodych, tj. do 30 roku życia. Konstruujemy panel zbiorów kwartalnych BAEL obejmujących okres 1995q1-2008q4 i w każdym z kwartałów estymujemy model selekcji do samozatrudnienia z uwzględnieniem korekty Heckmana. Wyniki wskazują, że w Polsce podejmowanie działalności gospodarczej wiąże się często z tzw. strategią przetrwania i jest bezpośrednio powiązane z sytuacją na rynku pracy. (abstrakt oryginalny)
