Population Changes in the Towns of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship

An analysis is made of population changes in the towns of Wielkopolska voivodeship over the years 1990-2003. The voivodeship stands out among the Polish regions as one with the greatest number of towns, but a relatively low proportion of the urban population. This is due to the numerical prevalence of small towns of up to 20,000, which make up about 80% of towns of the voivodeship. Interrelations between the natural increase and migration are discussed as well as the role each component plays in population change in the towns under study. The contribution of the components differs over time and largely depends on the size of the town, its administrative functions, and location in the voivodeship. (original abstract)
