Abstrakty

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie roli armii i jej ewolucji w systemie politycznym Turcji. Głównym zadaniem sił zbrojnych, zgodnie z zasadami kemalistowskimi, jest nie tylko obrona państwa przed zagrożeniami zewnętrznymi, ale przede wszystkim utrzymywanie jego integralności terytorialnej i jedności. Środowiska wojskowe mają wpływ na kierowanie polityką zagraniczną Turcji. Charakteryzują się one tendencją do upraszczania zagrożeń międzynarodowych, przyrównują je bowiem do problemów wewnętrznych w państwie. (fragment tekstu)

The role of the Turkish army changed throughout the centuries. Historically, armed forces enjoyed a special status, both under the Ottoman rule and during the Republic period. At that time, the army was the driving force behind the modernisation of the state. Nowadays, fears are expressed as to whether the military doctrine is going to be a hindrance to the democratisation of Turkey. A reform of the relations between the civil and military authorities is a vital issue which will determine the future of Turkey on the international arena, particularly in respect of its integration with the European Union. The recent changes on the political arena should also prompt a reassessment of the shape of the Turkish political system and the role of the army in that system. (original abstract)
