The concept of supply chain security was developed in the United States at the beginning of 21st century as a consequence of terrorist attack on World Trade Center in New York. As a result, the government of the United States decided on closure of the country's airports and seaports, which to a greater extent than the attacks themselves, influenced the activities of exporters and importers. Many companies were not prepared for such disturbance which led to even greater losses than previously expected. Governments and international organizations took further effort introducing new regulations and initiatives aimed at minimizing the likelihood of a terrorist attack. However, these decisions were often taken in rush and were not preceeded by thorough cost and benefit analysis. These regulations have also become a source of imperfections. These imperfections result from the lack of compatibility between the security initiatives and regulations, and the actual threats to international supply chains. The aim of the paper is to identify and analyze the imperfections in the area of security and to determine their importance for exporters and importers taking part in international supply chains. The conclusions presented in this paper were collected from surveys conducted among representatives of the Polish companies involved in the export or import of goods. (original abstract)
