Risk Management in Public Hospitals in Poland - Selected Issues

Both in theory and practice risk is becoming an increasingly important topie in the public health care. This issue is particularly demanding, due to a distinct profile of services provided by public hospitals in Poland, as well all over the world. It is difficult to capture the specific character of risks experienced by public hospitals and, conseąuently, handle these risks. This is currently a major challenge for health care managers, who are morę and morę willing to acąuire knowledge in the area of risk management methodology - which applies, in particular, risk Identification methods - as, on one hand, risk has to be first iden- tified correctly if it is to be estimated subseąuently and if appropriate methods and risk responses are to be selected and, on the other hand, any mistakes madę at the stage when risk factors and specific risk categories are identified are likely to lead to incorrect risk assessment in public hospitals [Tworek, 2015b], These problems are addressed in this chapter, which aims to outline the issues related to risk management in public hospitals in Poland. In particular, the paper is an attempt to find an answer to the following ąuestions: What is the specific character of risk facing Polish public hospitals in their operations? and how should such risk be managed in these organisations? When looking for the answers to these ąuestions, the author drew on her knowledge and experience gained during her long-term work as a professional health care manager both in private and public hospitals in Poland. Apart from practical issues, the paper also contains some theoretical deliberations on the problems of risk management in the public health care sector. In particular, the chapter contains a review of scholarly literaturę in this field. (fragment of text)
