Stakeholders as a source of risk in public hospitals in Poland - selected problems

Due to their place and role in the health care system, public hospitals are the medical entities which generate the highest costs, but often face limitations when trying to maintain a balance in their operations. There are a number of reasons for that, including the demographic changes, which have occurred in the Polish society over the recent years and which have caused the State to increase its ex- penditure on health care benefits and, conseąuently, to continue looking for innovative ways to carry out management in health care entities, with the aim of increasing their efficiency. A measure, which may be considered in order to inrprove the financial standing, is the adoption of strategic management instruments by public hospitals in their practical management processes. In addition, a growing crisis of public finance forces managers of public hospitals to focus on the need to search for potential resources, which can be located in the environment of public organisations and possibly employed in their operations. The latest statement means that managers of public hospitals face a major challenge of having to identify the right stakeholders, the resources they may tap into in a public hospital and the risks posed by the stakeholders if their expectations are not satisfied.
