Numerous studies on adult mortality in developed countries have yielded useful descriptions of mortality differentials, according to various socio-demographic characteristics of the individual and of his sphere of life. These studies do not, however, develop any satisfactory causal model linking these characteristics to the health and survival of the individuals. It is therefore necessary to follow in the future four different paths: the elaboration of conceptual frameworks, the analysis of existing data according to new points of view, the development of more adequate procedures for data collection, the construction of a methodology enabling us to test our causal theories. Conceptual frameworks have been proposed in demography for infant mortality. Similarly, one has various explanatory schemes in epidemiology concerning specific diseases. We propose to open the latter to. various variables which are not yet taken into account, especially social and demographic ones. (fragment of text)
