Abstrakty

Instytut Gospodarstwa Społecznego od początku swego istnienia zajmował się badaniem i opisywaniem warunków życia różnych grup ludności. Szczególne zainteresowanie badawcze IGS było kierowane na ludność będącą w najtrudniejszej sytuacji społeczno-ekonomicznej. Jak nam się wydaje współcześnie, prace badawcze należy koncentrować na tych właśnie grupach ludności, niedocenianych przez ekipy rządowe, od których zależy postęp społeczny i ekonomiczny, a nawet byt narodowy. Taką grupą ludności są nauczyciele, którzy wpływają na kształtowanie postaw młodego pokolenia Polaków. Celem naszych badań było poznanie szeroko rozumianych warunków życia najważniejszej substancji narodu, jaką stanowią nauczyciele. Wychodzimy z założenia, że badając warunki życia, jesteśmy w stanie chociaż częściowo odpowiedzieć na pytanie: czy ta subpopulacja może w pełni angażować się w pracę zawodową przez system nauczania, wychowywania, samokształcenia, podnoszenia swoich kwalifikacji. Sądzimy, że właśnie zawód nauczyciela jest szczególnym przypadkiem powołania i do tego zawodu powinna odbywać się ostra selekcja, wszak nauczyciel - jak samo słowo wskazuje - ma być wzorcem godnym naśladowania z punktu widzenia etyki, intelektu, warunków żyda. Dlatego też ludzie, którzy decydują się wykonywać ten zawód, muszą mieć zapewnione godziwe warunki życia.

The authors present the results of a survey carried out by the Institute of Social Economy in June 1994 on the scholars, employed in the Warsaw School of Economics. The study was intended as a stepping stone towards knowledge of better research methods and a better understanding of the problems of scholars. The main goal of this research was to examine living conditions and needs of different types of Polish families. We are especially interested in the fringe families (teachers', scholars' and such) as they seem not to be appreciated enough by the subsequent governments and establishment. In our opinion the role of such families in our society is highly unacknowledged, which we believe should be changed in the near future. We hope that our research might help to introduce some of the desired changes. The paper consists of some more interesting results of a questionnaire survey concerning the situation of scholars and their families. We also tried to recognise attitudes towards work and its condition in our School and the scholars' opinions concerning different issues. It seems from our studies that the majority of scholars decided to follow this career path. They also appeared to be quite devoted to their work, despite considerably small salaries. The inadequate salaries of scholars cause several problems. Scholars, forced to seek other sources of income, cannot perform their duties properly. They also have less time for personal development and research work. The survey encompassed a wide spectrum of the scholar community, differing in many regards. The financial situation of the surveyed depended mainly on their professional status. Among other factors differences in the material situation of scholars depended on the social class of their origin. Those, whose parents had higher level of education, were also better off than those with lower educated parents. Some scholars' families enjoyed their considerably high standard of living thanks to money earned by scholars' spouses. Nevertheless, in most cases, earnings of scholars constituted the main source of income for their families. That explains their activity in finding extra jobs.(original abstract)
