The selection of proper materials for different components is one of the most challenging tasks in engineer's activity. The traditional approach to the selection of materials required looking through the literature and material safty data sheets.With the development of information technology, engineering work has also changed. It involves not only arduous browsing catalogues and guides but also defining queries in database applications. This approach greatly accelerated the process of selection of materials, but it did not eliminate all the problems associated with obtaining information from large data sets. This paper presents the developed Web Material Selector application designed for computer-aided materials selection. The WMS allows to work with very large databases through the use of a professional tool to manage complex data structures. At the same time the application is designed to optimize the search process, what significantly reduces the number of materials whose properties a designer should carefully consider.(original abstract)
