Market processes, and hence market economies in general, are driven by human action. This also applies to processes that eventually lead to changes in the institutional framework, i.e. rules, and organizations. Incentives which drive human actors to behave in an entrepreneurial way and thus amend market processes, structures, or rules, are not fixed, but variable. In particular, they can be intensified by incidents such as economic crises, because times of crisis or their aftermath offer new opportunities for arbitrage. This article represents an introduction to this mechanism, thus reinforcing the basis of the economic analysis of the financial crisis and its impacts on banks and firms in Eastern Europe and beyond. (original abstract)
